Overview of Lindenberg's work and main areas of interest
Siegwart M. Lindenberg (PhD Harvard 1971) is professor of Cognitive Sociology at the University
of Groningen (rug), the Netherlands. He is one of the directors of the Interuniversity Center for Social
science theory and methodology (ics) and member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
His main interests lie in the areas of:
- Microfoundations for theories on collective phenomena:
especially , theory of model building, theory of social rationality, goal-framing theory, theory of
human goals and wellbeing (SPF theory), theory of norms.
- Groups and relationships (including various forms of solidarity and contracting),
especially theory of interdependencies (functional,
cognitive, and structural) and theory of sharing and joint production and theory of solidarity.
In much of Lindenberg's research, these micro-theories and the theory of groups are further developed
and applied, mainly to the following three groups of topics:
- Community: theory of the social production of wellbeing (community as multifunctionality in
social relations), theory of solidarity (moral force of community), and theory of sense of belonging
(community and identity).
- Governance: in organizations (theory of trust and reduction of mistrust, theory of relational
signaling) of organizations (corporate governance: theory of sustainable corporate social performance),
and by the state (including theory of revolutions).
- Institutions, especially theory of formal institutions
